Midnight sun in Yukon: what to actually do at 11pm

For 3 weeks around June 21 the sun barely sets — here are 6 activities that only make sense in daylight past midnight.

The 3 essentials

1) Paddle the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Lake Laberge at 10pm — the light goes golden, the wind drops, and you have the whole river. 2) Golf at Mountain View or Meadow Lakes at midnight on solstice — both courses offer solstice tee times, $50, no floodlights needed. 3) Hike Miles Canyon or Grey Mountain in the late evening — the basalt walls glow orange from 9pm to 11pm. Nothing in your life prepares you for a full-daylight midnight.

The 3 quieter options

4) Have dinner outside — the deck at Woodcutter's Blanket or the Klondike Rib & Salmon patio, then walk. Restaurants close at normal hours; do not expect midnight service. 5) Solstice bonfire at Shipyards Park — free community event on June 21, drum circle, thousands of locals. 6) Drive Alaska Highway toward Haines Junction at 11pm — mountains at low angle, no traffic, moose sightings routine. The Kluane range looks nothing like it does in normal daylight.

The one problem

Sleep. Your body will not want to go to bed when it is fully light outside. Book accommodations with blackout curtains — the boutique places advertise this specifically because it matters. Bring an eye mask. Do not schedule an early morning if you’re planning to embrace the midnight sun the night before. Locals genuinely stay up until 2am for three weeks in June and then crash. Adjust expectations. The trip is not restful; it is disorienting in the best way.

Questions, answered

Does the sun actually never set?
In Whitehorse it dips below the horizon for about 4 hours around solstice but never gets dark. In Dawson City, it barely touches the horizon.
Are shops open late?
No. Retail closes at 6–8pm as normal. Bars close at 2am. It is daylight, not extended trading hours.
