What it is
The Dempster starts 40 km east of Dawson City and runs north through Tombstone, over the Arctic Circle, across two river ferries (Peel and Mackenzie), through Fort McPherson and Inuvik, and — since 2017 — onward via the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway to the Arctic Ocean at Tuk. Total distance from Whitehorse to Tuk and back is about 3,000 km. It is entirely gravel. Speed limit is 90 km/h; realistic average is 60. You need 4–5 days minimum, 7 ideal.
The six warnings
1) Fuel — pumps at Eagle Plains (km 371), Fort McPherson, Inuvik. That's it. Fill everywhere. 2) Tires — flats are common; carry two full-size spares, not one. 3) Gravel insurance — mandatory add-on for rentals, $15/day. Your windshield will crack. 4) Ferries — Peel and Mackenzie ferries run summer only; winter needs ice crossings (December to April). May and October are shoulder gaps where the road is closed. 5) Weather — rain turns sections to grease. Check 511 Yukon before you start. 6) Cell service — dead. Get an inReach.
The payoff
Tombstone Territorial Park in the first 100 km — arguably the most beautiful place in Canada in September when the tundra turns crimson-orange. Crossing the Arctic Circle at km 405 (photo stop, real sign). Wildlife: caribou, muskox, gyrfalcons, grizzlies routinely visible from the road. Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean — small hamlet, pingos, and yes you can dip your feet in the Arctic Ocean. Bragging rights forever. The Dempster is not a scenic drive — it is a commitment. But it is the drive of a lifetime.
