The village in an hour
Haines Junction sits at the junction (obviously) of the Alaska Highway and the Haines Highway, 155 km west of Whitehorse. The town is roughly 8 blocks and you can walk it in 20 minutes. Everything worth stopping at clusters near the Da Kų Cultural Centre: the Village Bakery (pizza after 5pm, coffee from 7am), Alcan Motor Inn, Raven Hotel and its restaurant. The famous 'muffin' — the sculpture at the highway junction depicting Yukon wildlife — is out front of the visitor centre. That's the town.
What to actually do
Use the town as a base. Day trips: Kathleen Lake (30 min south), Auriol Loop (10 min drive to trailhead), King's Throne (day hike from Kathleen Lake), Dezadeash River Trail (right from town, 5 km flat). Flightseeing over Kluane launches from the Haines Junction airstrip and Silver City. If you have three hours only, drive to Kathleen Lake, walk the shoreline, and eat at Village Bakery. If you have three days, do the Auriol / King's Throne / flight combo.
Where to sleep
Raven Hotel is the nicer option, $180 with the best restaurant in town. Alcan Motor Inn is functional and $130. Kluane RV Kampground has cabins if you want simpler. Wilderness lodges within an hour: Kluane Wilderness Lodge (remote, meals included, ~$400), Cabin Fever Retreat. Skip: the roadside motels along the Alaska Highway east of town — they’re for trucker overnights. In summer book Raven 2–4 weeks ahead. In winter walk-in is fine and it's magical without other tourists.
